The first step of your licence journey is to complete your Basic Handling Assessment which consists of four stages:

Basic Turn & Stop

  1. Mount the motorcycle, start the engine, signal, and move off from the parking space, turning left onto the course.

  2. Accelerate along the straight to about 20 km/h, then slow and signal to turn right around circle C.

  3. Come to a complete stop after exiting circle C, turn the engine off, and remain seated.


    Remember to check your blind spots when moving off and when turning right.

Figure of 8 and Park

  1. Start the engine, and ride straight towards circle A.

  2. Turn right around circle A, riding through the middle between circle A and B, staying left off the center marker.

  3. Ride straight, passing the place you started from, then turn left around circle C. Ride straight, stopping near to circle A.

  4. Then, reverse park to your left so that you are parked between circle A and B.

  5. Turn the motorbike off, put the side stand down and dismount.

Linking Figure of 8's

  1. Get on to the motorbike, start the engine, and move off to the right.

  2. Go around the top of circle C, then do 2 complete figure of 8's around circle B and circle C.

  3. Keep left of the center marker each time you go through the middle.

  4. The third time you go around the top of circle C, ride straight ahead and stop between circle A and B.

  5. Turn the motorbike off and stay seated on it.

    You only need to signal when you move off.

Increased Speed and Emergency Stop

  1. Start the motorbike, and move off turning right around circle A.

  2. Increase speed to 20km/hr. Ride at a safe speed, turning right around circle C.

  3. Increase speed to 20km/hr.

  4. When the instructor signals, stop the motorbike as quickly as possible, while maintaining full control.

    There is no need to signal. If you are not travelling fast enough coming out of circle C, the instructor will signal to you to ride around again.
